Change and conflict doesn't always need to involve every character, and some characters tend to stick to their ideals while learning something in said process. If you're writing Sonic in a different narrative, don't mess up the fundamentals and the characteristics on what makes Sonic who he is. Also none taken, I think Tails' growth was stunted after Unleashed because back then he was able to be capable of things without relying on Sonic much seeing his growth from Adventure, Heroes, and Battle.
