Dunno if the writer is here, but I hate seeing writing posted here go unanswered, so I read your thing out of principle. It's nice. I assume Woe is the focus and she's the interesting one so I have to ask what the thinking is behind using another OC (Basil) over a game or comic character like Tails/Tangle or something. Yes, that they have another year. The volumes will just keep getting translated up to whenever it finishes. Which I think will be issue 100. A shift is coming. I don't think the comic itself is ending, but I think they're gearing up to end it on a non-cliffhanger end so they can transfer over to a new publisher. And then everything will start fresh anew, but post Frontiers instead of Forces this time. It can not be coincidence that IDW just suddenly says they have a year left, next year is Sonic's 35th anniversary and the comic is getting rid of every post forces plot thread.

It's cool. Sonic is COOL. He is the coolest and the fastest and the best-est ultimate-est awesome-est thing to ever exist. Like, genuinely.

If you want relatability on a personal, human level, that's what Tails is for. But what inspires that growth is Sonic. Tails strives to be like "Sonic", and "Sonic" is thus the actual character we focus on above all else. Amy is a girl in love, and all of growth and development centers around her chasing of that unattainable love interest for her, which is "Sonic". Knuckles is an immovable mountain bound by his duty to protect the Master Emerald and Angel Island, but some part of him deep down yearns for freedom even if he doesn't want to admit it. That freedom is represented by Sonic, and that's what their rivalry is truly about.

Sonic is the ideal they all strive for or are challenged by in some way. He's not supposed to "human". Sonic is not Spider-Man, he is the spider that bit him. The story is about how Sonic's influence changes the world around him, not how the world changes Sonic.

Lost World isn't a good example to use because it was predominantly written by Pontaff in English and then re-written by Sonic Team in Japanese to course-correct what Pontaff did where they could.

In that specific scene, Sonic is disappointed in himself for failing to stop Tails from being caught in that trap, after Tails saved Sonic from that same trap seconds earlier. In context, it's just fine. But trying to use it as an excuse to paint Sonic as "insecure" is wrong.

You can't claim to write a "better" Sonic if you are unwilling to properly engage with and accept his official character as-is. Not surpassing Sonic in a Simon-Kamina manner, which is what I think you want. The proof of that is that they just kept adding more side characters for Sonic to inspire instead of developing Tails further. I've seen it myself, they move onto another series, find another character who's design they like, maybe draw art of them and that art slowly no longer resembles the original character, but instead a projection of concepts they personally enjoy rather than what the character presents in their series originally and rinse repeat when they get bored. These characters don't need to change to suit your personal needs or wants, you and others just need to get better at recognizing that you only want a neat design to make headcanons and derivative concepts out of.

Change and conflict doesn't always need to involve every character, and some characters tend to stick to their ideals while learning something in said process. If you're writing Sonic in a different narrative, don't mess up the fundamentals and the characteristics on what makes Sonic who he is. Also none taken, I think Tails' growth was stunted after Unleashed because back then he was able to be capable of things without relying on Sonic much seeing his growth from Adventure, Heroes, and Battle.

It's one thing to put Sonic in that scenario. How Sonic responds is another thing entirely. The choices Sonic is likely to make are dictated by who he is as a person and what it is he is likely to do. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make 'em drink.

That being said, "self-serving nature" is an odd description to apply to Sonic. I'm pretty sure I know exactly what you're referring to, but on the other hand, I also have no idea what you could possibly be referring to at all. Either way, Sonic is established to be the kind of guy that never gives up or gives in when he's under pressure, even in a situation where it's all but certain he'd lose. In Black Knight, that scene against Merlina, before Excalibur Sonic happens, the situation is presented as so dire that there's no way Sonic can win. But he refuses to give up the fight, as "It Doesn't Matter" states, and so he only doubles down and presses on anyway. If the Excalibur-Sonic transformation didn't suddenly occur in response to that strong spirit, then Sonic likely would have died fighting.

This shows how strong Sonic's belief and confidence in his worldview or himself or whatever is. Changing Sonic's mind is never gonna be an easy task, as it depends entirely on Sonic making that choice himself. You can put Sonic in a situation where the entire world is designed specifically to destroy him and break him down, but he himself has been established to be the exact kind of person that would never compromise on his beliefs and actions in spite of that. He'll keep fighting even if it kills him.

To truly deconstruct Sonic's behavior while keeping him accurate, you'd likely have to dig even deeper than that and explore why Sonic thinks the way he does and where it truly comes from.
