Where is everybody getting all this lore and this, did I play the game wrong?

I went through 7 "acts" of popping things in the head with the magnum because everything else felt weak and did less damage, nuked a fetus, and then the game was over.
There was even less explanation for what was happening in game than EYE.
I don't get it. I had fun but I really don't understand how theres an entire thread of things to discuss.

Is it really just "crotch strap hot" that fuels this game's existence?
