The problem is that you can't build up romantic relationships in the main story over and over and over again without it becoming jarring as you do it with one girl and then next patch forget her and do it all over with a new girl.

That's why it's better to have it on the side where you yourself can decide what girl you want to spend time with slice-of-life-style away from the main story.
