The game's design really is paradoxical as far as the goals go, and it ultimately boils down to a lack of substance. There are goals and things to keep the player engaged and the philosophy is something like live service but new things are offered (at least these days) very slowly, and seldomly. A lot of the weeks have been rather unspectacular in the last year, so it almost feels like they are working against the philosophy of the game, there's gotta be something there to keep it fresh somehow, completionism in gta online is a years long errond.
Frens can make things interesting but even that kind of rests on the back of what people have available to them in the game.
I could be wrong, that's just my personal takeaway from my experience, and it could be a me problem, I've come to see 2 possible ways of approching the game, from goal oriented (long term scope) and a more in the now way of playing, and I have felt unsatisfied in both of them, but this really probably is just down to my experience, plus I'm dumb. Never really had frens to play it with, nor much to offer there, but I'm sure it theoretically could be fun. Only problem there is sociability, a domain in which I'm utterly destitute.
