Except removal WAS trending up in 2012. Doom Blade was reprinted in Magic 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014 because WotC still had enough brain cells back then to recognize that removal needed to match the threats creatures posed. Arguably 2011 swung too hard in the other direction with cards like Leyline of the Void, Surgical Extraction, and Mental Misstep being 0-mana answers.
However somewhere along the line WotC stopped trying to make removal match the power of creatures, and ironically went in the other direction with regressing it. More spot removal is locked to sorcery speed than ever, and is frequently comically overcosted in the name of having bumfuck alternate modes nobody cares about.
