I had one of those Nelson-Rigg pouches with an MSR bottle from REI. Pretty easy to strap anywhere because it's only 1L, which I think worked out to (only) 10mi that I wouldn't have to walk/push my bike. There were only a couple of times I came close to needing it but never actually happened.
