Sonic in general just doesn't know how to nostalgia. In Bananza you have a game chock-full of new environments and enemies to last for hours, so the throwback twist at the end after a subtle but steady build-up feels respectful. With Sonic it's either cramming you into a Generations asset flip or randomly throwing out quotes and name drops from old games in an already flavourless experience.
