The character designs were better than the games themselves. I liked the first and second Battle Arena Toshinden for their time. You look back at them, and they are pretty jank. But the first one was a nice take on the 3D fight genre conceptually. I think it did sort of create the 3D weapons-arena fighter sub genre of 3D fighters. The mainline series was mostly exclusive to the PS1. There were a few unique Saturn ports. The first game was highly advertised near the Playstations launch (in most regions) and put up against Virtua Fighter 1 on the Sega Saturn. By the time the game was released in the NA market, Takara were already announcing Battle Arena Toshinden 2. The games did have some popularity on the Playstation before Tekken kinda took over. Bloody Roar was also a mainstay 3D fighter on the PSX. Battle Arena Toshinden is such a weird relic of the mid to late 90's. The artstyle has that mid 90's hyper exaggerated anime look.
