There's a "cat alley" in onomichi i went to and saw a total of 2 mangey cats alongside its derelict buildings. Bunch of cat decorations but not a lot of cats.
I then went to fukuoka up a random huge flight of stairs to a temple and saw 3 cats.

Neither of those temples in those areas were cat themed.
