it's not the smoke, it's the nitrites. Pink curing salt converts from nitrate to nitrite when you digest it, it carries a slight risk but it's not so bad that everyone should freak the fuck out or something. It's not asbestos.

Something to keep in mind about nitrates and the whole "uncured" organic meats you'll find at fancy grocery stores.

"Uncured" meat is literally a lie and actually has more of the unhealthy nitrate than their cured counterparts. It's bizarre but marketing is marketing and the FDA decided that this labeling was fine for some stupid reason.
