Heres where its confusing or flattened, or the contour direction is not good. When you place marks on the paper, the white spots left behind show the form and directionality of something. If you don't keep it in mind, you get muddy or flat forms.

Placing flat tones is totally fine as a starting point in a long drawing btw, because you'll have lots of time to mess with it. But in gesture or short figure drawings, it flattens and kills your forms. Scribbles do this as well, too much direction makes it directionless.
