I actually think psuedo-modern/sci-fi settings would still be more interesting than fantasy. If you're going fantasy and sticking with the defined gameplay I think a big focus should be the things surrounding the units.
Having good units but they're fighting in wood country, ice country and lava country and they're throwing just magic missiles would be really stale.
Though even Warside mostly did this too with its land choices, so it's not like that problem is particular to fantasy.
I'm not the biggest fan of DoR's artstyle but that it was set it in an apocalyptic setting was cool, made them be able to do that plasma between meteor shit for example.
The planet sucking crystals and giant oozium in DS, though campaign stuff, were also cool.
Let the genre choice inform some cool shit to see.
