It was Legacy-based, which is entirely the problem. With disappointing sales of the last-gen Legacy, which had already been dropped from markets like Australia and Japan, it's now been discontinued with 2025 being it's last model year.
This gives them the advantage of "broadening the appeal" (their words) of the Outback since they're no longer constrained with sharing proportions and a platform with a sedan. Of course, that means making it look more boxy and SUV-like since you've now got boxy competitors like the Honda Passport and Hyundai Santa Fe to go up against, and of course they have to lean into the outdoorsy image since that's the style of the current time.
That doesn't mean that all this is dumb as hell however. Once upon a time you could even get a "Legacy Outback" in sedan form, of all things.
