The hard backlash against the counterculture and it's aftermath that was the 1960s and '70s during the 1980s says otherwise. Where there was a strong resurgence of moral authority with family life at its center.
My best guess on why the family declined is that Americans essentially walked away from civil society and its institutions (Church, School, Clubs, etc) which is MASSIVELY understated.
