Shmups and large-scale story never works, cutscene or long dialogue in-between stages drags and fucks with the pacing, even if it's skippable I can never get invested because it gets annoying as soon as the lore dump starts. Short banters between characters are fine, but anything outside of that do it outside of the game.
DDP SDOJ is an exception though, it was a good idea to make the "story mode" into a different mode from the arcade mode, and make the conversation happen while playing.
You can turn your brain-off if you don't want to hear it, and when I want to consume lore I can listen to it like a podcast while I'm practicing the run (rip sub fags though).
