Now this citation of Augustine is the same as the one in the idolatry image above, just expanded. I recall reading in Augustine (and I believe it was this very citation) a condemnation of idolatry which was particularly powerful, since he responded to the defense of the pagans which proved their doctrine (which he obviously rejects) is the exact same as that which the Romanists use to justify the worship of images. He also responded to them accusing "you also have your venerators of images", saying "would that we did not have them, and would that we did not go on having them" making him a witness along with Epiphanius that the worship of images first appeared in the Church during the late Roman Empire among ignorant laymen drawn in from paganism by the decrees of the emperors, and that their practice was recognized, condemned and prohibited by the authorities of the Church at that time.
