Not surprised, you're likely right in the city or even worse around the bus station or even worse than that on the weekend.
In town is completely overrun with obnoxious entitled Malaysians on the weekend, didn't think food was that pricey but alcohol was basically double for no reason, hotels go up 50-70% more on Fri/Sat. There's basically nothing good in there, I think it's shit too.
I'd only go into to town because there was a bargirl I liked on the main street who let me fuck her out back and there's one bar across from the huge Chinese temple that's ultracomfy and with cool owners. Both overpriced as fuck but I happily paid more to chillout and talk shit.
That said...
Outside town you can get three big Singha's for 90 in an airconditioned bar with live music, packed with cute university students 6 nights a week and a unisex toilet that looks like it belongs in a 4 star hotel.
Everyone travelling there does the instinctive dumb thing and stay in town, that's why no one really gets it. Kho Hong is fun, surrounded by nature and got a lot of energy.
Hat Yai centre is crappy and full of old Malays wearing hijabs rolling around in tuktuks pumping dance music, it's cringey.

Would recommend Richmann Resort if you in HDY, $60 a night for luxury, tried to get them to do a monthly rental but they couldn't. Subanan down the road is better located where you can just stumble out of the bars into the lift, did 1 month there for 12k, was good but no real facilities except for a library on the top floor. Transport is generally needed out there, I'd get sick of relying on grab after a few days, each to their own.
