The Apollo lander was was basically a superleggera spacecraft built specifically for political gain. There was very little scientific value to be gained past the few missions it accomplished. They are basically trying to establish a lunar space station and moon base this time. The absolute batshit crazy that it took to go to the moon back then almost doesn't exist anymore. The scale of an actually useful program makes it many times harder than just getting their in a tiny ass pod. scooping some rocks and doing some small experiments and then getting back as fast as possible. It was an incredible, herculean accomplishment that they did it, but what they want to do now is next level.
