I think the best way to show Sonic standing up for something is if he does at the expense of his friends. Not just your garden variety Shadow conflict. But something that even Tails or Amy, people who understand and die by Sonic's side, would maybe not agree with him with for some reason. Or in that scenario maybe one of them is the only person who agrees with him, but, that's a little more boring? Not sure.
