I remember the period from 2000 or so to 2010 had a lot of Amerimanga coming out. I use the term "Amerimanga" to refer to manga and anime coming out by non-Japanese authors.
A lot of it just wasn't very good. I remember this series Dramacon that was about an anime girl at a convention. Svetlana Chmakova's art style and storytelling ability was never all that appealing. Her Nightschool manga was kind of a mess too.
Tokyopop even had a "Rising Stars of Manga" contest to find new authors. I remember they botched it by underpaying the authors. They really didn't come out with anything highly iconic from the contest other than maybe I Luv Halloween- which they tried to aggressively advertise.
2010 came with "My Life Me" which is also about an anime girl in high school. It lasted 2 seasons, which was a pretty good run. After My Life Me, Amermanga just kind of died out and felt outdated.
A lot of the authors of Amerimanga just didn't have much life experience other than liking anime. And this was pretty apparent with the writing.
