if shields made ranged combat impossible, i feel like people would just switch to things like gas and fire before they reverted back to using swords. or just a good old fashion pits of stakes. or legend of the hidden temple style crushing traps. or sound weapons. or maybe just immobilizing people by entangling them with net launchers. basically anything but swords is what i'm saying because ranged >>>>>>>>>>> melee.
