To add to this I'd also like to point out that they first met at conventions yes, but not anime conventions. Anime conventions are where things really exploded and how furry conventions got started, but the first place these people actually met and realized they had something that could support a zine movement was Star Trek conventions. The first one of those was in 1972, Disney's Robin Hood premiered in November of 1973, and the 1974 Star Trek convention was in February. So you can kind of blame both Disney and Star Trek for getting the ball rolling.
