As an originalfag, I really feel the best way to play XI now is to play retail and treat it like a very expansive single player RPG. You can never bring back the old internet that made FFXI's community what it was. The people on private servers just suck all the fun out of the game. If you want to maintain difficulty you can always just not break your level caps until you're absolutely certain you can't clear something otherwise.
