I can agree with that. But the actual Zodiark got the most incredible fight and send-off in the entire game. That's why it should have ended with Elidibus's fight instead. It deserved to be the final battle.

It's even more depressing knowing Endwalker was supposed to be two separate expansions. Yoshitpiss being retarded is what led to it all just being crushed into a lackluster single expac because he wanted to rush out the ending to cash in on the XIV hype.
Zodiark's theme was clearly meant to be a final boss of the expansion type of theme.
Instead we get cucked out of a proper Garlemald expansion. A decade of build up and fighting against garleans only for them to be reduced to ONE instance with a tiny city in ruins and an FF4 dungeon with a FF10 boss. On top of that, the final days are also cut short to a single dungeon and area, making it all a less credible threat than anything else in the game.
Shadowbringers was the peak of XIV's story.

As an originalfag, I really feel the best way to play XI now is to play retail and treat it like a very expansive single player RPG. You can never bring back the old internet that made FFXI's community what it was. The people on private servers just suck all the fun out of the game. It hurts that now everything is datamined in minutes, wikis and tools are huge, communication is outside the game, and people don't play MMOs for the same reasons. The only problem with treating XI as a single player RPG is at least from my experience with it, is that the game gives you very little guidance both overall and on a per quest basis.
Like, I don't mind being given a bit of info and then asked to work stuff out, I do dumb shit like play Morrowind with the map modded out and having to go through individual paper maps. BUT at least in that game you get a journal where anything important an NPC tells you gets written down. You get given directions to places and you can ask NPCs for directions.
When I played that wasn't a thing! I got a guild quest in Windurst and it was like a couple of lines of dialogue telling me what to do and then nothing, couldn't speak to them again to get the info, no diary/journal with that info in it. I'm not asking for quest markers/"go here and click on the glowing marker" thing.
So you resort to guides which remove all the mystery. I had to use the guide on the chocobo quest because I was asked to find some chocobo tracks - I was given a zone to look in that was about 2 miles across, and nothing else. And I don't think the tracks were even visible!

I would definitely play "FFXI: Single Player Edition" where they added a quest log. Not even waypoints, lemme find stuff, but give me hints or directions. Those directions don't even need to be optimal - in Morrowind some of the questgivers give you directions that ignore the existence of silt striders, so you take the LONG road.

Yeah, the book is on the far east end and the tracks are on the northwest end. It's perfectly set up for a San d'Orian native to find but everyone else is basically gonna have to pray a Sandychad friend found them.

I was playing on the free trial, got to Jeuno, then went elsewhere and met a character. Then I bought the game, went back to Jeuno, and got a twenty minute cutscene clearly set WAY after the beginning of the game with the character I met an hour ago treating me like an old friend. It was really confusing, like if I was playing ARR and walked into Limsa and a cutscene from Endwalker played.
I like that XI has some non linearity, more than just a single quest chain - do some guild quests which gives you enough notoriety to speak to a town leader and that drip feeds you the next bit of main quest. XIV honestly could use that.

I kind of wish there was a more general guide to XI's systems so I didn't just get absolutely flattened like I did when I played it, without having the "here's the BIS/here are the best skills" stuff.
Like, what's the point in having the job/subjob flexibility if the guides basically go "you should do this and this only"? I unlocked dancer and leveled up crafter so I could craft/buy two Lady Bells, so my character could dual wield handbells as clubs (they go DING when you hit enemies, best thing ever). Kinda a random aside, I really do not agree when Wuk is compared to Lyse. Stormblood didn’t focus on Lyse all the time, other chars took the lead for certain arcs, and she wasn’t “written out” as reception to her presence, she formally left after base story.
Wuk I disliked cause the whole “rite of ascension” plotline was like one of those sidequest chains where you help a character succeed at something, but this took up half an expansion. Hell, for example one that comes to mind in DT is helping a hunter in Ix Braal pass his exam.
Lyse felt way more natural in helping out because now Eorzea got caught up in a full on war and trying to figure out what to do with that, and setting up a dual frontline to split the resources. Wuk didn’t even do anything comparable, every time it’s just “let’s go talk to people and see what their culture is like!” Heritage Found, Solution 9, and Living Memory. And then she does a fist clench.
I really enjoyed Stormblood because it was a buildup of a conflict that started all the way back to 1.0. Dawntrail just introduces a continent that had all conflict resolved 80 years ago, then needs to literally pull something out of thin air (Ninth shard macguffin). But they still don’t know what they want to do.

No, you don't, WoL has no secondary story in SB other than getting back on Zenos, and even then thats not really true because WoL only ends up fighting Zenos because he invaded Rhalgr's reach, Yugiri's plan and the final assault on Ala Mhigo castle, WoL does not have a secondary plot.
In HW they don't really, they've been branded as an outlaw in the city states but that doesnt come up and is resolved without any input from WoL.
ShB is the only time WoL has some agency, in that they choose to go to the First to save their friends and save the first.
And in the end of EW where they choose to fight Zenos.
WoL has never been the actual protagonist of stories.

Finally did an EO solo clear myself last night. I last tried like 2 years ago, then kept on doing other stuff.
What kept on getting me was lapsing focus in floor 31-50 with some of the one shot attacks (and talking to friends in voice chat lol).
But knocked out 61-100. I’ve done those bosses solo before in a party run back then, so thankfully I still had the muscle memory.

In the entire story and even the FATEs you don’t kill a single person. Look at fates against human mobs, they don’t die, they fall to their knees then run away. One exception is a boss fate against a zombie guy.
Open world sure you can “kill” bandits, but nothing in the storylines or FATEs. Even role quests is just capturing the baddies.

I assume you're in 5.4 since the Gabu mention. I'd suggest at least finishing 6.0.
6.x is not all that awe inspiring (probably less of a slog than it was when it was current, though), and I'm sure you've heard the tales about 7.0. You'd have to decide if you're willing to get through that.
There is some other stuff. EW has a good raid series, a so-so Alliance Raid series, there's variant dungeons, etc.

The Twelve pop up because they were obsessed with chasing down ANY loose end from the original setting, whether it really was one or not, so even something as simple as "humans didn't try to summon the Twelve too often, why is that?" got an alliance raid.
