Israel and Iran are far apart; there will be no ground war. Israel has been invaded a bunch of times, and no American soldier was ever deployed on the ground to defend them. There is no US defense treaty with Israel, like there is with every NATO ally; Japan, South Korea, etc. The only recent invasion US ground troops fought against in the Middle East, was the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in the 1st Gulf War.
Furthermore, most of our actions in the Middle East are about countering China, by controlling the supply of oil to the Chinese coastal cities. We wanna be able to turn off the lights in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou; without going anywhere near Chinese coastal defenses. That means US hegemony in the Middle East. "Protecting Israel" isn't a goal; it's an excuse to dominate the region to counter China. If it was a goal, we'd have a senate ratified defense treaty with them.
