He's completely right. Deference to authority is the most core value of conservative ideology, and that desire is borne out of a primal distrust of others. People MUST be inherently looking out for themselves, and trying to fuck you over for personal benefit. Thus, the only ways you can remedy this are by fucking them over first, or by having some authority figure come in and forcing people to do what you want them to do.
This is why they believe there is no morality without god. This is why they believe that it's OK to exploit and harm others to get ahead. Because they think that (you), or anyone else, would do the same if given the chance.
Ironically, this ideology (or its psychological underpinnings) is self validating. You don't trust people, they don't trust you. You fuck people over, they fuck you over. You take that bribe because why the fuck not? Everyone else is doing it, why are you going to be the 1 moral person while everyone else gets ahead?
And that line of thinking isn't wrong, on a personal scale, but on a wider scale this type of thinking is a poison that destroys societies. It doesn't need to be like that.
It's a vicious cycle, one that you see in every low-trust, conservative society around the world.
