You're free to make your own interpretations, but when someone asks "what did x mean," the word of the author is going to have more value than "as a consumer of the media my interpretation was this." No interpretation besides your own need mean more to (You) than your own, but that doesn't mean that every interpretation by every consumer is equally valid.

Further, you don't even seem to know what "death of the author" is. You invoke it like it's some kind of law. It's just a literary criticism that has itself been challenged by similar criticisms. It's one guy's idea on the validity of personal interpretations, not case law in a court.
