Yeah, the underlying emotions are the real "point" of the scene. It ties together all the themes of the movie. Luthor thought he bested Superman by using his own altruism against him, but in his grief and anger he became so powerful it glitched out space-time itself. I don't want to seem like the "just turn your brain off" or "shut up about plot holes" guy, because I do hate that normally, but this one just works.
