X-files
Binging X-files. currently up to season 4, no sign of burnout.
Post you favorite episode. Do you like monster of the week or main story? You can like both, but you definitely like one more than the other.
post Scully

Season 4 is still peak X-Files. Season 5 starts to show signs of stagnation, but it's still good. Season 6 is very hit or miss. Season 7 is mostly trash. Season 8 starts promising, but runs out of steam. Season 9 is just pathetic. The revival seasons only have 2 or 3 worthwhile episodes.

I liked main story but it loses all its steam around midway through s6.
I don't know about my favorite episode. the MOTW I found most frightening were the ones where technology starts sending messages to people or the water supply makes people hallucinate

Just finished original run, is the revival worth it? I heard they make skinner ambiguously good/bad again which is so tiresome
Anonymous No.213484268 >>213485003 >>213485390
I wish it was more consistent. Like you have episodes such as the cockroach robot one and it's so ambiguous as to what is going on I'm left confused. It's like there are two different shows, an ayy black oil conspiracy show and then a Twilight Zone anthology starring Mulder and Scully.

Pretty much this. It's all downhill from season 4, albeit gradually. The main story episodes are better than monster of the week ones, up until that point. Not that there aren't some great stand alones (y'know the ones, Pusher, Last Repose, etc) but there's more emotional investment in the mythos arc until S5/the movie starts fucking things.

This is weird because it's a S7 episode in S3. I always thought it was a weird fit for that period of the X Files.

Low key one of my faves. It's ridiculous (at least super hot roach expert is) but it's a lot of fun and the best example of those "Mulder and Scully are apart but one of them is getting annoyed/jealous with what the other is doing" episodes.

s01e08 Ice. the MotWs were my faves

It's a good episode by itself, but the minute you start asking "where do these aliens fit in with any of the other aliens" it breaks down.

I was never super into Ice as it's just a bit too similar to The Thing.

the achilles heel of x files is they were clearly making shit up on the fly and had no obvious endpoint. there were multiple moments throughout the series that could've served as a satisfying finale marker and they just...kept going

A lot of that was the network's fault. Carter tried on at least two occasions to wrap up the show (first with the movie and then with the s7 finale) but it was too popular for Fox to willingly let go, so they had to course correct to keep the mythos going.

It's good until season 7, little dude, season 6 also has a lot of comedic/romantic epsodes and is filmed in California so many people can't stand it, but I personally love it and consider to be part of golden era.

Revival had dogshit myth arc and very wonky premise, but there are some good standalone episodes, Scully is still hot, Mulder is not phoning it in for the first time since season 4 or 5, also both seasons are really short, daddy Skinman is the same as always, there is even motw episode about him.

What they should have done is ended one mythos arc and started a new one.
>Mulder: "Gee, I'm glad I finally found out what happened to my sister and stopped the colonists. What closure!"
>Scully: "Mulder, look at this, there's a new ayy conspiracy with completely different aliens. And they kidnapped your sister again!"
It's that easy.

Mytharc should have ended at season 4.
Feels like there's maybe one or two decent mytharc episodes after that for the next seven seasons

Yeah its literally just The Thing. But a lot of episodes were like that. The Carrie ripoff episode was interesting because of the twist.

the first movie is 10/10 kino
Anonymous No.213493085

Movie feels like 3 myth arc episodes with higher budget, none of the characters got properly introduced and nothing seems to be resolved, story just moves a little further along, which is fine if you are the fan of the show, but imagine showing this to somebody unfamiliar with X-files, I highly doubt he will like it.

Second movie has the opposite problem, it works fine as a standalone detective movie, but doesn't feel much like X-files, bad guys weren't even paranormal.

I prefer monster of the week. I find them overall to be more fun, outre, and comfy.

Every X-files season ended on huge status quo shattering cliffhanger which would be quietly resolved in episode 1 or 2 of the next season, imagine waiting an entire summer for some lame cop out resolution
