Exactly this. Mainline Pokémon explains its mechanics terribly. We don't need the games telling everything that's going on slowly and one stat at a time during every battle or the endgame and postgame bosses cutting in to talk about type matchups for little Timmy. Little Timmy needs a proper tutorial with simple text and demonstrative battles, also make it optional so Johnny and Spike don't have to be dragged along and can just get on with the game.
As brought up in another thread, having a library to look up moves, items, stats, etc. in the game without resorting to a guidebook should be a staple feature in the Pokédex or somewhere the player can easily access.
