Basically the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico separated from Mexico and the local castizos/criollos basically tried to start a proto-apartheid style system of seizing land from Mayans and reducing them to landed serfs. Mayans had already been living partly in Europeanized societies and knew how it worked simply said fuck that, and started slaughtering all the criollos and enslaved the mestizos. They had a tradition of making blow guns and copying crossbows. They then got guns from British Belize which had a Mayan minority and started making simple hand made firearms through reverse engineering. The Mayans won then got bored and the peninsula rejoined Mexico later with Mexican mestizo control, but it's the one part of Mexico where the Indigenous (Mayans) still have a lot of money and power because they didn't ever fully back down. Interesting stuff. Their art looks Asian too. Also a chunk of them are now mixed with Koreans.
