Yes, the mallet is in the book. It's actually a roque mallet and not a croquet mallet so while it does have a somewhat silly visual connotation it could be used to murder someone. It was the right decision to change it for a movie though, as King writing is very regional and while you can put down a book to look something up you can't stop the movie in the theatre. Funnily enough it's the opposite case for Misery, where in the film she uses the hammer to break his foot, but hacks his foot off with an axe in the book.

I mean if Kubrick directed the miniseries script and Mick Garris directed Kubrick's script the Kubrick one would still be lightyears better. And I see Carrie as a director's cut of the book essentially because he had to add all the epistolary stuff to pad the story out to get it sold as a novel. But all the meat is there, which is why King loves the Carrie movie so much unlike Kubrick's movie.
