The world wasn't "better" per say. You were just a rich kid from rich country blissfully unaware of existence of how much Chinese were getting paid to make your toys.
Fresh from wars bosses needed qualified workers more than ever to quickly grow, expand, exploit the uncontested markets. It was important for businesses to train their own workers and make sure they get paid a lot so they don't leave.
But you can't infinitely expand. Eventually you'll reach critical mass and start to collapse. And the worker class is the first one to be sacrificed. Ideally (((they))) want to transition into some sort of global empire instead of letting pyramid scheme destroy the world with them but that ain't gonna happen. Imagine putting your faith in greed and treachery.
