Is it nostalgia, or was video gaming and the world better between 1990-2007? Nothing since has ever quite hit the same.

You have no reason to believe me but I'm a public school teacher in the United States, have been for about 5 years now. I work with age 11-15.
Kids today don't have nostalgia, at all. They do not look back fondly at anything from their childhoods.
I played Super Mario 64 religiously when I was a kid, and when the DS came out I looked at the Super Mario 64 DS as a remake from my childhood.
These kids have nothing. They brainrot and Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox exclusively. Occasionally you'll get a group of boys into CoD, Apex Legends, or NBA/NFL titles, but that's it.
Nobody watches movies. Nobody watches cartoons. Nobody reads. Nobody has firm opinions about music other than the Spanish kids really into Bad Bunny/$uicideBoys.
Ours seems to be the last generation that got art.

I believe. You arenโ€™t wrong, Iโ€™ve introduced multiple children to video games that were 10-12. By their age I had three consoles. Itโ€™s a symptom of inflation honestly, no one buys media because streaming is cheaper and you cannot stream games so parents use cell phones for games. Cell phone games are not games, they are advertisements children should never be allowed to even see.

wouldn't surprise me, Fortnite hasn't ever "gone away" these kids have played the same live service games from age 7 to 15. When you or i was looking through magazines thinking about what new games were coming out, these kids are on their tablet getting excited about the next update and which new skins (that all reference old things these kids have never heard of) will get added next.

Much better. It wasn't nearly as much of a normie hobby as it is now. Video games going mainstream resulted in hiring devs based on college degrees, networking, and DEI to make games that appeal to the lowest common denominator. Back then game devs were usually just nerds and autists. You also didn't have to wait 6 - 8 years for a sequel too. Games also took more risks, instead of playing it safe because they cost $300 million to make.

Yes, America and Japan had global dominance, things were good, then Americans went to the middle east and fucked themselves and the Japanese stopped created things and instead preferred to sit in a cubicle. Now China has Global dominance and they can hardly make anything good because there is a billion of them and they are communists(kinda). America, instead of creating things of value, started sending all of its money to kikes and niggers, while the Americans are all fat and lazy slobs, who only want to watch their goyball and eat their pizza. So yes things were objectively better before than they are now and they are only going to get worse until we nuke: India, Africa, China, and Israel.

zoomers are literally retarded, games were objectively better back then because it was an emerging market and genre. There were a lot more risks taken, games were developed by vastly more passionate devs because it was so niche, the nature of the technology required them to deliver a completed product, graphic restrictions mean they had to be more creative with storytelling, music, gameplay, etc.

What's worst is I'll be talking about games as they come out (students ask me how I spent my weekend, I say playing Elden Ring/trying out the new Civ Game) and sometimes they'll respond with "Oh I know what that is!" to find out they're talking about some streamer playing it.
They don't even retain the names of these streamers, they just mindlessly consume. It's insanity.

Triple A games were far better back then but indie games were almost nonexistent and the ones that did exist were either janky piles shit and/or crappy shareware or mediocre games such as the RPGS spiderweb software put out. Nowadays, gamers have an overwhelming amount of indie and AA options via Steam and many of them can stand up to the classic games of the past.

>>713291467
Is correct to an extent except for the world being just as bad as it was back then. The world--at least the first world--used to be better before shit like the patriot act and widespread collection of data/spying on citizens happened. Zoomers don't remember a time when we used to actually have a bit of privacy. The things that you were saying on the phone or typing on your computer didn't automatically go into a secret government database.

Misusing slang is a function of being too old to understand "what the youth are saying" not an indication of being ESL, you moron. Comedy movies and sitcoms have poked fun at old people being clueless by misusing slang for as long as I've been alive. People aren't misusing it ITT anyway.

This is what they try and make everybody believe, but people are becoming more aware of the lies we've been told to keep us docile as they rob us blind. It worked on me too back in the early 2010s when I was starting to notice how much exponentially worse everything was getting. You actually start to believe all the gaslighting that your own experiences were an outlier and that it's always been this way. It's really, objectively worse now in a number of measurable ways.

The worst part is how hard it became to prove how much healthier the world used to be since like 40% of the old Internet's images are gone forever. Everyone that used the Internet in the 2000s uploaded their images to sites like Imageshack, Tinypic, and Photobucket, all of which are pretty much erased from history unless you had the foresight to save them elsewhere. Unless it's Reddit, YouTube, X, or Instagram, the rest of the Internet might as well not exist to newfags who just let the algorithm feed them content, demoralizing everyone further. The Internet used to be so much better when it was an escape from the real world. Now you have to actually touch grass to not go insane from doomscrolling.

The 80s and 90s were the decades of video games and the Internet coming into their own. Every old person thinks that the decade during their teenage years was the best one but for many nerds, I'd say the 80s and 90s were peak if they're being honest with themselves. Better, by miles, and I was not living well at the time. Girls were more fun, people went to the movies and arcades, TV wasn't woke (even mocked that), and except for the Rodney King shit, race relations were pretty good.

I remember shopping malls, hanging out at the beach, playing fun games on floppy disc, and having face to face conversations with friends instead of texting.

Life before smart phones and 24hr news was much better, life during dialup was also better overall.

I had the advantage of being a GenX boomer, which mean my afternoon was on a bike with friends, catching a matinee for about tree-fiddy, hanging with my girl at a park, reading books, and seeing a world of opportunity. Nintendo, video tape (usually Top Gun or First Blood) and MTV on the weekends.

40 and under will never know that feel.

They don't have nostalgia because they're overloaded with so much data now and oversocialized to an extent never seen before in human history that it goes in one ear and out the other. Before you can even ingest the information you received, you're already scrolling through to the next video, not retaining anything. Content creators on Tiktok or YouTube have to make their content in such a way that it will grab people's attention, but it ends up being nutrition-less as a result. If you don't feed the algorithm what it wants to see, your video won't be watched. Same with video games, it's not about if your game is worth playing, it's about whether or not it has potential to go viral and trend as a FOTM title. It's all brainrot.
Nobody actively does anything anymore, it's worse than TV ever was because at least with TV, you had to plan around when to be free to watch your favorite shows. Instead of hundreds of channels, everyone just has one channel tuned specifically to keep them addicted.

I think it boils down to the fact that humans are not meant to have access to so much information about the world that they have no control over. It's too much, people were way happier when life was simpler and all that mattered was their family and maybe their local community. It's also ruined the mystique of human interaction when you learn through decades of social media that no one really has anything good to say about fuck all.

Not that anon but no one is forcing you to use social media. You can just unplug from it. I deleted my facebook and linkedin 7 years ago and feel just fine. Outside of 4chan and youtube, those were the only social media websites that I used regularly and honestly, I barely use those shithole nowadays. Until yesterday, I hadn't lurked in a month. Just delete your accounts and suddenly, the Internet isn't as crazy as it once was.

I only really started seeing that after covid. I know it's easy to blame social media for how absurd and insulated people are nowadays but even the most irrational people online seem far more sane when you speak to them face to face. I know a guy like that who would constantly sperg and screech about his obnoxious politics online but when I speak to him in person, he's the most calm and rational guy ever. It's all fake. You're better off just unplugging, man. Trust me.

Born in 92 and I know I missed out on many things, but for games, what was cool was that missing out wasn't much of an issue because it was also a time where physical collections were casual and passed down in the family. Before I got the n64, I had my moms old nes and a basket of like 20+ games, and always picking more up from the pawnshop and yard sales. Then some bigger kids had ps1 and sega, and we got to go over to each others house and experience completely different gamin experiences.

They also don't write. During my student teaching, I was recruited to help an English teacher grade her students' short stories (that were supposed to be a minimum of 1000 words). No paragraph spacing, no punctuation, no spelling/capitalization, and no imagination. "we climbde teh laddr n saw a vera bradly pruse, i tuk it hom becuz i needed knew purse, teh end." That's the level of writing these 8th graders were churning out, and were genuinely dismayed that they didn't get A's on their work.

The one story in the class that came closest to getting an A was written by ChatGPT.

Information is one thins, and we had that, but content is something else, and that's what we have now. Think we were content consumers in those days? Not really. We didn't keep it essential, but we weren't buried under noise all the time.

The internet and smart phones have numbed people, younger people from an earlier age. Younger people aren't encouraged to be creative, and with AI even less so.

I hate to finally say it, but in my day we had to use our imagination, and we communicated like people in persona and did activities together.

Yeah, I remember as a kid reading magazines about dry spells, summer was usually the worse. It wasn't until around the later times of the PS1 that hits were being pumped out regularly. The PS2/Xbox age was great for this. The market wasn't saturated, so every game had to really count. From my perspective, the SNES was probably the best of all time, because the games were great, releases were a big deal, and shovelware was rare. Games around that time on all systems felt innovative and sometimes huge (Xcom, Tie Fighter, and Ultima 7 were amazing in their day) and nothing felt streamlined, simplified, and padded out to death.

>>713300468
No. I'm a black(ish) and the joke about 80s blacks vs 90s blacks in Family Guy was actually pretty spot on. Look at movies from the two periods. *-0s blacks were the lively buddies, 90s blacks were gangsta stereotypes

It does count. That decade was far more impactful on me than you because I was a kid yet old enough to clearly remember the entire decade. I remember what it was like first discovering that the Internet existed when I saw someone at the local library playing a MUD. Both my brother and I were totally blown away and it wasn't long until he obtained a paper route job and saved up for his own PC. Within a few years, I was running a starsiege tribes server at 12 and owning people in Quake 2 and Shogo because my town recently obtained DSL capabilities so everyone else on dialup couldn't compete with me.

I miss online games being made to be fun around the primary public experience, meaning large player counts in pubs, up to 64 players in some cases. Having high player server numbers is important for a number of reason, but the biggest 2 are:
>it gives noobs a chance to learn the game's mechanics, maps, and gamesense at a leisurely pace
>it keeps cheaters at bay because they will be kicked almost as soon as they join without them taking over a server

The text only graphics and the online interaction with a bunch of different people was so radically different from what I thought a video game was supposed to be up until that point. Both my brother and I knew that we had to have a PC at that moment. Discovering emulators and piracy for the first time also had a wild impact on me as a kid.

The world wasn't "better" per say. You were just a rich kid from rich country blissfully unaware of existence of how much Chinese were getting paid to make your toys.
Fresh from wars bosses needed qualified workers more than ever to quickly grow, expand, exploit the uncontested markets. It was important for businesses to train their own workers and make sure they get paid a lot so they don't leave.
But you can't infinitely expand. Eventually you'll reach critical mass and start to collapse. And the worker class is the first one to be sacrificed. Ideally (((they))) want to transition into some sort of global empire instead of letting pyramid scheme destroy the world with them but that ain't gonna happen. Imagine putting your faith in greed and treachery.

White businessmen played a lot of video games in the 90's. Having a console or just being a part of the community meant sharing in a cooperation with Americans that enjoyed the same hobby from a specific walk of life. As a kid, you could relate to adults a lot more, and businesses like Squaresoft and Nintendo knew that, so they made games accordingly.

I've read the manga Gantz four times over 13 or so years, I'm almost thirty now. The first time I've read it it was the greatest thing on the universe to me, l have literally never felt more emotion reading a work of art, book, manga, movie or otherwise. I still check on new manga occasionally but I don't see the appeal of the newer ones coming out, it's like there's something lacking in them, soul, if you may. Or maybe I thought that I just grew up. Turns out I didn't, I've read Gantz again this year and it was as great as I remember, probably even better now because I'm an adult and can read many nuances that I couldn't back then. It's modern art that is failing, everything is souless and uninspired now, the collective human spirit is degenerating at an insanely fast rate, be it in the movie business or anywhere else. And also in gaming; everyone with two working eyes can see it as clear as day. But I believe in a revival, the new gens are capable of that if they learn to reconnect with the world around then.

Without frame of reference the industry has managed to convince generations of little children that what they have experienced has been nothing sort of a miracle of back to back perfect games and consoles. Every policy and feature meant to fuck them over is the greatest thing thats ever existed and will exist until something more profitable comes along. Its fucked up to think that theres literally nothing else for them to compare the hellscape that is the gaming hobby to.

Like my first consoles were the NES and the og Gameboy so I got to see gaming progress over the years very fast whereas zoomers never got to experience that. Like seeing the jump from the NES era to the snes/megadrive era to the ps1/n64 era to the dreamcast/ps2/gamecube era to the 360/ps3/wii era was crazy. Not to mention that zoomers missed out on arcade games. I feel like they missed out on all the great times of video games and just arrived at the end when its all meh and shit.

If you bought a game, you mastered it and unlocked all the secrets no matter how ass it was, because you didn't have access to infinite media at your fingertips like today
If you met someone in an online game you valued your friendship with them because online communication was novel, as opposed to today where people are online 24/7 and devalue other human beings from overexposure of having to read their stupid fucking opinions
We lived in our bubbles and we were happy. People today are being barraged with shit that doesn't affect them and are miserable as a result.

Honestly, I miss this the most. It feels like women have done a complete 180 from being a bit annoying but mostly tolerable, cute, fun-loving, have genuine feelings for you and generally enriching to be around to being boring cunts that judge you and are willing to jump to the next dick over the smallest thing.

Also the social nature of everything. 90-99% of all activities and hobbies were a group thing. Nowadays, it's near impossible to do that past a certain age and even then it's not a guarantee you'll be with people that you can actually talk to.

Up until that period, things weren't as great as they were in the 90s (which had it's own share of problems like the Oklahoma City Bombings, Ruby Ridge, the AIDS epidemic and the Unabomber), but they were still fine. look at the progression of mobile phones over those years
>car phone
>nokia brick
>nokia brick with screen
>flip phone
>razor thin flip phone
>pda/blackberries with full keyboard
>iphone/rectangle touch screen smartphone
2010-2025, an equal 15 year span, has no progression. we are still using the same type of smartphone. every aspect of tech is like this. the form and function of everything was "solved" in 2010
