Video games going mainstream resulted in hiring devs based on college degrees, networking, and DEI to make games that appeal to the lowest common denominator. Better, by miles, and I was not living well at the time. Girls were more fun, people went to the movies and arcades, TV wasn't woke (even mocked that), and except for the Rodney King shit, race relations were pretty good.

I remember shopping malls, hanging out at the beach, playing fun games on floppy disc, and having face to face conversations with friends instead of texting.

Life before smart phones and 24hr news was much better, life during dialup was also better overall.

The text only graphics and the online interaction with a bunch of different people was so radically different from what I thought a video game was supposed to be up until that point. Both my brother and I knew that we had to have a PC at that moment. Discovering emulators and piracy for the first time also had a wild impact on me as a kid.

I've read the manga Gantz four times over 13 or so years, I'm almost thirty now. The first time I've read it it was the greatest thing on the universe to me, l have literally never felt more emotion reading a work of art, book, manga, movie or otherwise. I still check on new manga occasionally but I don't see the appeal of the newer ones coming out, it's like there's something lacking in them, soul, if you may. Or maybe I thought that I just grew up. Turns out I didn't, I've read Gantz again this year and it was as great as I remember, probably even better now because I'm an adult and can read many nuances that I couldn't back then. It's modern art that is failing, everything is souless and uninspired now, the collective human spirit is degenerating at an insanely fast rate, be it in the movie business or anywhere else. And also in gaming; everyone with two working eyes can see it as clear as day. But I believe in a revival, the new gens are capable of that if they learn to reconnect with the world around then.

I dont mean this in a fuck zoomers way or anything but it must be weird to be zoomers and be just be thrown into videos games as they are without having actually grown up watching games evolve. Like my first consoles were the NES and the og Gameboy so I got to see gaming progress over the years very fast whereas zoomers never got to experience that. Like seeing the jump from the NES era to the snes/megadrive era to the ps1/n64 era to the dreamcast/ps2/gamecube era to the 360/ps3/wii era was crazy. Not to mention that zoomers missed out on arcade games. I feel like they missed out on all the great times of video games and just arrived at the end when its all meh and shit.

Up until that period, things weren't as great as they were in the 90s (which had it's own share of problems like the Oklahoma City Bombings, Ruby Ridge, the AIDS epidemic and the Unabomber), but they were still fine. In fact, I'd say the 2000s was a solid follow up act to the 90s on the whole especially the early to middle part of the decade

I rarely consume any media made after 2008 anymore. Once in a blue moon something decent will squeeze through but for the most part I just stick to old media. I apply this to games/movies/shows/books/etc.
