I don't blame you for not remembering this because it only flickered in my head with effort but there was a time when the Netflix Mailer was the definitive form of media. For less than the price of a Blockbuster rental, you could get a dozen movies a month, mailed back and forth. The bastards definitely "throttled" you if you went far past that, because their postage costs were exceeding your membership costs.
That was a massive advantage DVDs had, they were so thin and light that they could be sent like letters for pennies each while a VHS tape would have to be a proper package.
Netflix claims their all-time most-mailed DVD is Sandra Bullock's "The Blind Side," a 2009 release which about matches the timeframe of Peak Mailer.
