Nintendo had a bunch of "illustrate those sprites as something appealing to the gaijins - no, you won't see the actual art" artists for their western Nintendo Powers and Club Nintendo mags under their wings who did the page illustrations, comics, posters, etc. and for some reason they even did some of those for Evermore.
It's also how you got stuff like the infamous Katsuya Terada FF4 interpretations or middle-aged-bum Lance from Illusion of Gaia.
