That's the crux I find with most fiction that has a pantheon of gods actively meddling with the mortals. By virtue of being in the narrative at all, you welcome the regular occurrence of dues ex machina explanations into the work.
I don't think they're wholly bad though, it's more about how they're used and at what frequency.

Eh, them not so much. The problem with the Exaltists is that it's very tempting for the writers to blame EVERYTHING on them. We need more valuable antagonists that cause problems. ZZZ's lower scope is perfect for this, they could have plenty of reoccurring Team Rocket style villains to comfortably distract from the Exaltists and do their own worldbuilding.
