Fighting men did in fact own daggers all the way from quite large to tiny and for all of history chose the blades I pointed out, they were no strangers to using smaller blades in desperation or because concealment or pack weight were overriding concerns. I don't know what you mean by "up close" these blades were ideal for "up close". You get in tight to stab with a modern cope dagger and you're getting a five finger wide blade up to the guard in your chest.

There's no rock paper scissors downside to the big knife/short sword as opposed to the modern small combat knife tactically. The modern knife is literally just trading effectiveness for bulk in your pack, that's the advantage. It's not faster, it's not better, you wont stab with it more, it's just less heavy on your body as you're marching.
