Could it be that the script doesn't measure up? Could it be that gen had a lot of misgivings about the direction of the show? Could it be that they felt the ending would be even more divise than rebellion?

If we think of the first 12 as as a single movie as they more or less aught to be (they go over a single arc, and rebellion goes over homuras) the _only_ classical remaining film left is the metaphorical return of Jedi capstone on the franchise. And that's the most ideal scenario. Evangelion rebuilds shows how dramatically this can sink below that icon of quality. Combine the fact that this is a franchise that's floundering instead of wearing out it's welcome and it becomes obvious aniplex wants whatever this is to rebottle or reset the lightning to the beginning instead of be the swan song it needs to be and it's obvious that the only likely direction this will go is down.
