I've heard this as well but I remember when I was evaluating it they were in the middle of changing the UI around.
I'll have to look into this again. Blender would check some good boxes. Portable, open source, not terribly resource intensive. But I need to see how it compares and what the set up is like since video editing isn't the primary purpose of it.
