It is an extremely interesting dynamic when we can be presented with people with enough pragmatism to set aside their preconceptions and collaborate with unconventional partners, especially when it turns out the collaboration is fruitful to the end, because you expect it to not work, so if it doesn't work it ends up as predictable, but if it does work, and you give reasons as to why it works, suddenly you've added depth, tension, character, and a measure of attachment to the unlikely bet.
Everyone loves ogres specifically due to that flexibility, and many conventionally evil races could work just as well, once you've smoothed some of their edges for what concerns the ones involved in these fringe scenarios.
