Despite everything, Kris does care for their friends. Stops holding back in the Knight fight if Susie and Ralsei are downed. I'm still clinging to this dialogue in Chapter 1 and taking it to mean that Kris wants to save the worlds by fulfilling the prophecy, working with the Knight is part of carrying out fate.
If nothing else, they made a promise to someone, upholding that seems pretty altruistic to me.
