I think the word you are looking for is more autistic than most people
from the beginning we were only talking about surface level, skin deep similarities-- things which are almost coincidences, and almost certainly similar to eachother because even between Japan and America, Nihei and the artists at Valve were probably enjoying similar sci fi works
Like yeah no shit both of them were probably influenced by Giger; everyone saw aliens after all; we aren't talking about a deep art-historical analysis on their respective styles, or for a comparison between the narrative
Not that all Sci Fi is fundamentally the same, but that some stuff between sci fi can be shared-- less "Song of Fire and Ice and Tolkein is the same" and more that "hey this armor from the Peter Hackson film looks similar to the armor the worn by this Carstark" or something like that
Similarity=/=Sameness, its a spectrum from "hey this looks kinda similar with the forehead-emphasizing rebreather face masks and jagged black metal buildings and concrete" all the way to "The Odessey versus the Aeneid"
no one is trying to say that they're the same story, or even the the same mode of storytelling, just that there are some elements, mostly visual, between them which are SIMILAR
