Perhaps Magic players could adopt a certain aspect from the fighting game community's arcade days.
Have a table which is the "cab" (as in arcade cabinet or arcade machine). You pay to play here. Perhaps a dollar to get a sit-down. There's no expectation of socialization other than what's necessary for the gameplay. Winner stays on, loser gets up and the next guy sits down. If you can manage a multi-game win streak, then wow you're really good!
