It even makes sense for Carol to do something extreme as causing the Roaring, where it becomes Darker than Dark to find her. If she's so lost in Darkness, how come she can prance around the Light World?

The Bunker on itself has a Dark World, it shares the same smoke we see from all of them, Carol should know well enough to develop stuff related to the Dark World herself, much like I said earlier about bat to sword. She could very well made something along the way to have an armor suited for Dark Worlds to conceal her form and possibly more.
If that is truly Dess, how come Kris can even envision her taking off the helmet then if for some reason she's some amalgamate or whatever? Someone did say earlier she's completely stuck like that, doesn't make much sense then.
I have a theory of my own on why would Dess have the code, by seeing something she shouldn't have as she wrote it down on what was available to her at the time. And Carol being autistic enough to let things stay the same as they were never got rid of it.
