I've posted about this in the past. The idea really depends on you, if you live alone, the trust level you have with your friends, and if you've got access to some space like a garage. You might want to concider something small like invitingone or two freinds to a LAN party and work together to setup a local game server from the ground up. The idea being that, together you setup machines, and work though the issues that will inevitably crop up getting things to work. The group reward will be an evening of fun, and building your friendships. I would strongly recommend a co-op LAN game like L4D2 as apposed to a kill eachother type game. If you have friends that are too far, setup a Wireguard server if possible so they can enjoy the game with you. The idea being that eveyone who wants to participate must configure thier PCs to make it happen, and few things are as motivating and bideo gaymes.
I believe this will natually lead to /sec/ discussions, hardware upgrade and mod discussions, among others. If you're successful, you will have planted a seed that can turn into a hackerspace in time. I'd be very interested to know if you move forward with that suggestion, and would personally like to know of your progress, and help if I can- if your serious.
btw, have you checked if there are any hackerspaces in your area that you can join? I also looked into this, but the spaces nearest to me are too far and at $50 buckarros a month, too expensive to join. IMO, if you build your own HS, they will come, and it will grow organically if you commit to it. Setup a private BBS for you guys to use, and use it to keep in touch with your crew. Hope this helps.
