The thing is that Verhoeven isn't the fucking AUTHOR OF STARSHIP TROOPERS. Robert A. Heinlein is. That's what makes the argument so preposterous. Heinlein was a radical Rightwing Libertarian. Verhoeven was a radical Leftwing Communist. Heinlein wasn't concerned about Fascism, he was concerned about the right to self defense. Verhoeven saw the Fascist boogeyman around every corner, so he adapted Heinlein's parable on the necessity of self defense up to and including genociding the aggressors into a parable on "wouldn't it be bad if there was a military? Kinda yikes if you think about it."
