I don't know anon. For me 3DPD wasn't as much about rejection of outside world as a whole, just preference for anime women over real life one. Just not being interested in sex or pursuing romantic relationships, not giving up on all of my future or appearance. In that sense nothing fundamentally changed over the years.

My waifu is Homura, whose entire character is being devoted to another woman. She wouldn't care about me, neither as a boyfriend, nor a dad, nor even as a friend, and I am perfectly ok with it. She doesn't or wouldn't give a shit about me at all, and I don't mind. She isn't some cope for imagined perfect relationship that I'm never gonna have for me. I admire her for who she is (and she is a beautiful fictional character who embodies my values both visually and spiritually) and she lives rent free in my head, and that's the core of it.
The core that made me gather dozens of artifacts related to her, including figurines, dakis, stickers, and other collectibles. But this is just a symptom, and it's perfectly possible to have a waifu without gathering any merch of her, this is all the matter of personal preference, because ultimately a waifu is in your heart first and foremost.
As for having children, no, just no, I'd rather kill myself then have children. I hate children. Other then beautiful anime lolis, who are pure and completely unlike real life children. Also, I wouldn't like to spoil my waifu with such a disgusting thing as pregnancy, even if she wasn't who she is.
