I think this is what some people don't think enough about. Yes, unlike Digimon, Pokemon's games were more consistent in quality and how they played. Also, yes, due to being turnbased, and simple to follow, someone that could be considered genuinely mentally retarded or physically disabled could play Pokemon. However, part of the success, like Harry Potter, was coming out at the right place, at the right time. If pokemon came out for the first time today, it's popularity would be somewhere around Splatoon or Smash Bros.
